A few quick steps to configuring the show/hide formatting marks button.

[Solution 1] Show or hide formatting marks


  1. Open Word.
  2. Open the File tab and click Options.
  3. Select Display and under Always show these formatting marks on the screen, tick the options you wish to display.
  4. Select OK to save the new settings.

[Solution 2] Turn off squiggly lines


  1. Open Word.
  2. Open the File tab and click Options.
  3. Select Proofing and under When correcting spelling and grammar in Word, clear the check boxes for the items that you want to turn off.
  4. Select OK to save the new settings.
