When attempting to install Windows Updates, an error occurs, stating that the Windows Update Service is not running. This error usually occurs after cloning a previous installation of Windows onto a new hard drive or when the required Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver is outdated / missing.

[Solution 1] Install Intel Rapid Storage Technology

  1. Download the iata_cd.exe from the Intel website (page link). Do not download a newer version as it might not work.
  2. The full overview of Intel Rapid Storage Technology releases can be found at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/55005/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST. Try an older version if a more recent version cannot be installed. Windows 7 usually requires a 2013 release version.
  3. Install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software.
  4. Restart the computer and allow Windows Updates to search for updates.
