Windows Update Error 8024A000

When attempting to install updates for Windows, the updates are unable to install and error code 8024A000 occurs.

[Step 1] Stop & reset the Windows Updates


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute net stop wuauserv
  3. Execute net stop bits
  4. Execute net stop cryptsvc
  5. Execute ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
  6. Execute ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  7. Leave the Command Prompt open and continue to step 2.

[Step 2] Registering DLL’s pertaining to Windows Update


  1. Copy and paste the following commands in the Command Prompt and press enter:

    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll /s
    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll /s
    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msjava.dll /s
    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\jscript.dll /s
    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml.dll /s
    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\actxprxy.dll /s
    • regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wuapi.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wucltui.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wups2.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wups.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wuweb.dll /s
    • regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s
    • regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s
    • regsvr32 Initpki.dll /s
    • regsvr32 softpub.dll /s
    • regsvr32 wintrust.dll /s
    • regsvr32 initpki.dll /s
    • regsvr32 dssenh.dll /s
    • regsvr32 rsaenh.dll /s
    • regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll /s
    • regsvr32 sccbase.dll /s

  2. Leave the Command Prompt open and continue to step 3.

[Step 3] Restart the Windows Update services


  1. Execute net start wuauserv
  2. Execute net start bits
  3. Execute net start cryptsvc
  4. Close the Command Prompt and allow Windows to search for updates.
