Windows Updates Cannot Download Or Install Error 0x8024402C

These solutions apply to any of the following error codes that might occur during the download or installation of Windows Updates: 0xC80001FE, 0x80200010, 0x80070643, 0x80246002, 0x80070490, 0x80070420, 0x80073712, 0x80246007, 0x8000FFFF, 0x80070424, 0x80248007, 0x8007064C & 0x8024D00C, 0x8007066A, 0x80245003, 0x8024402C.

[Solution 1] Reset the catroot2 folder


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute net stop cryptsvc
  3. Execute md %systemroot%\system32\catroot2.old
  4. Execute xcopy %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 %systemroot%\system32\catroot2.old /s
  5. Open File Explorer.
  6. Open C:\Windows\System32\Catroot2.
  7. Delete all contents in the folder but do not delete the Catroot2 folder.
  8. Go back to the Command Prompt (Admin).
  9. Execute net start cryptsvc
  10. Allow Windows to search for updates again.

[Solution 2] Reset the softwareDistribution folder


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute Net stop wuauserv
  3. Execute cd %systemroot%
  4. Execute Ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  5. Execute Net start wuauserv
  6. Allow Windows to search for updates again.

[Solution 3] Reset the BITS queue


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute Net stop bits
  3. Execute Net stop wuauserv
  4. Execute cd \documents and settings\all users\application data\microsoft\network\downloader
  5. Execute Del qmgr0.dat
  6. Execute Del qmgr1.dat
  7. Execute Net start wuauserv
  8. Execute Net start bits
  9. Allow Windows to search for updates again.

[Solution 4] Rename pending.xml


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute takeown /f C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
  3. Allow Windows to search for updates again.

[Solution 5] Run chkdsk


  1. Open the Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
  2. Execute Chkdsk C: /f /r
  3. Allow Windows to search for updates again.
